Invisalign or Braces? Your Options

Braces are extremely common, so common that over 4 million Americans wear them. But not everyone wants traditional metal-style braces. Some people find them uncomfortable or hard to maintain. Some people don’t like the aesthetic, often associated with teenagers (even though 25% of braces-wearers are adults.)

But in recent years, a new alternative has emerged: Invisalign. Klooster Family Dentistry is proud to offer this service to patients across the Triangle, and we’re happy to help you make the decision on what’s right for aligning your teeth.

Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

Invisalign functions similarly to traditional braces: gentle pressure, over time, pushes your teeth into the proper place. Where Invisalign differs is structure. Rather than the metal wire of traditional braces, Invisalign uses clear plastic liners that slip directly over your teeth. The result is the same effect as braces without the aesthetic that so many people dislike.

But the advantages go beyond looks: Invisalign braces are structurally simpler, so they can be removed at any time and allow for normal brushing and flossing. There are no food restrictions, and no rubber bands or other cumbersome hardware to deal with.

That said, there are some disadvantages with Invisalign. For one, they can’t compete with the 100% compliance rate of braces; after all, braces can’t be removed at home! This means traditional braces may be a better choice for children – but each case is different and should be based on conversations with your dentist.

How Do I Know If I’m A Good Candidate?

Invisalign can fix many common dental problems, including:

  • Gapped teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite

Certain severe cases of misalignment cannot be fixed by Invisalign. Because each patient is different and requires evaluation by a dentist, there’s no easy way to guarantee if you’re eligible without a proper appointment.

That said, there are a few things that could prevent Invisalign treatment:

  • Active gum disease or cavities, which must be corrected first.
  • Implants or bridges
  • Age; teeth are still growing in some young patients
