Why This Matters
We know dental care is expensive, especially when paid out of pocket. Dental insurance offers a life-changing option to get the care you need without breaking the bank.
Insurance plans make dental care more affordable, offering full coverage for many costly treatments and partial coverage for others. This makes care more accessible, allowing you to maintain good oral health and improved well-being.
While 88% of Americans have some form of dental insurance, not everybody uses these benefits. One study found that of Americans with insurance coverage, around 22% had not seen a dentist in the previous 12 months. This can occur for a variety of factors, one being that many people may not understand the dental insurance benefits they have.
At Klooster Family Dentistry, we’re committed to helping you maintain your smile and understand how dental benefits can help you reduce overall healthcare costs.
We are one of the few local offices in-network with most dental providers, and we offer membership plans for those without insurance coverage. We know our way around insurance, and we’re happy to help you feel confident using your dental benefits to their full potential.
Understanding Your Dental Insurance
Dental insurance is similar to medical insurance, but different in a few key ways.
Dental insurance coverage focuses on preventative dental care and addressing issues related to teeth and gums, whereas medical insurance focuses on a wider range of medical services.
Like medical insurance, dental insurance covers an array of services—including routine visits, x-rays, fillings, cleanings, and some more extensive procedures like root canals and crowns to protect your oral health.
Dental insurance often has an annual maximum benefit, meaning the dental insurance plan will only pay a certain amount per year, after which the patient is responsible for the remaining costs.
Key Dental Insurance Terms:
- Premiums: The amount you pay for your dental insurance, usually on a monthly basis
- Deductibles: The amount you must pay out-of-pocket for dental care before your insurance starts covering costs. However, some services may be covered without needing to meet the deductible
- Copays: A fixed amount you pay for a dental service at the time of your visit. The insurance plan will cover the remaining balance.
- Annual Maximums: The maximum amount your dental insurance will pay for covered services in a plan year. Once you hit this limit, you must pay for additional costs out of pocket
- Preventive Services: Routine dental care designed to prevent oral health issues is usually covered at 100%. This includes exams, cleanings, scans, and fluoride treatments
- Basic Services: Common dental treatments that go beyond preventive care but aren’t considered major procedures. These are often covered at a percentage of 70–80%. These services may include fillings, simple extractions, and periodontal treatment
- Major Services: More complex dental procedures, like crowns, bridges, root canals, and dentures, are typically covered at a lower percentage, around 50%, and typically have a longer waiting period before coverage applies

Plan Treatments
Most plans have an annual benefit period, meaning your coverage resets at the start of each year. Consider scheduling part of your treatment before the year ends and the rest in the new year to take advantage of two coverage periods if you need extensive dental work.

Common Procedures Covered by Insurance
Preventative Care
Preventive care procedures help stop dental problems from occurring and are fully covered by most insurances. The most common type of preventive care procedure is regular checkups and cleanings. This allows most patients to have two checkups per year to address any concerns or problems with their teeth and gums.
X-rays and diagnostic imaging are also preventive—these are carried out every year or as needed, and help see the tooth roots and monitor jawbone health. Children’s procedures, such as fluoride treatments and sealants, are also seen as preventive services and fully covered.
Orthodontic Treatment
More and more dental insurance plans are starting to cover adult orthodontic treatment — including options like Invisalign. Why? Insurance companies are recognizing the long-term health benefits of straighter teeth, from easier cleaning to healthier gums.
While orthodontic coverage still varies by plan, many offer around 50% of treatment costs, with a lifetime maximum typically ranging from $1,500 to $3,000. In the past, coverage was often limited to children under 18, but we’re seeing a shift in that trend.
Basic Restorative Procedures
Basic oral health procedures are not preventive. However, they help fix minor dental issues like cavities or gingivitis. Fillings and simple tooth extractions, non-surgical periodontal treatments, and root canals fall under this category. These procedures are non-invasive and typically are done in one appointment.
The insurance company will pay a portion of the fees—around 80%—and the rest will be the patient’s responsibility.
Major Restorative Procedures
Procedures that require multiple appointments, invasive surgeries, or extended treatment periods are counted as major restorative procedures. Crowns, bridges, dentures, surgical extractions, and oral surgery fall in this category of major dental work.
Typically, a dental insurance plan will pay 50% of these treatments.
